All of the proceeds from this event will help fund Harvest Texarkana Regional Food Bank. Our food bank provides food to more than 100 agencies in Bowie County, Texas as well as Miller, Lafayette, Columbia, Nevada, Hempstead, Sevier, Howard, Little River and Pike Counties in Arkansas. By the end of 2009, Harvest Texarkana will have distributed over 2.5 million pounds of food to our neighbors in need in this region. This distribution takes place through the Food Bank warehouse bulk distribution program, the Food Rescue perishable food collection and delivery program, as well as the Backpack program which provides packages of food for chronically hungry children in their backpack each weekend.
Recent USDA reports indicate that at least 1 in 6 of those living in our region is hungry, and one quarter of all children live in homes that are food insecure. And the largest increase in the hungry comes in families of the working poor. In the great abundance of our country, it is inexcusable that our neighbors go without. Won’t you help us help?
